DUI at Elementary School
CBS News reports that police received a concerning phone call from Silver Lakes Elementary school. The caller reported that one of the parents in the school’s pick-up line was driving erratically. The school was understandably worried. After school lets out and children are running to their parents’ cars or starting to walk home, inattentive driving can quickly become deadly.
The parent, Lissett Llauro, was there to pick up her 6-year-old son. While pulling into the pick-up line, she ran over a series of plastic lane markers before nearly rear-ending another parent in line. The school’s resource officer immediately stopped Llauro and contacted the police.
When the police arrived, they asked her what had happened. She admitted to running over the lane markers but couldn’t articulate why or how it happened. The officers report that she had bloodshot eyes, slurred her speech and needed to lean on her vehicle in order to keep from falling over. She insisted that she had not been drinking and was not on any medication.
The arresting officer issued three separate roadside tests. Llauro failed each in succession. The officer noted that her body was swaying throughout the tests and she smelled like alcohol. Llauro exercised her right not to give a breath or urine sample. She was arrested and is currently charged with driving under the influence. It would be a surprise if Llauro did not look to find a DUI defense lawyer to support her case in court.
In court, Judge John Hurley expressed concern as he read through the police report. He advised Llauro that she should seek help from a rehabilitation center before her next court date. Llauro, who is the mother of three children, refused to comment to CBS correspondents after she was released from jail.
Judge Huxley is right to be concerned, not only about the level of negligence that Llauro displayed but also because this is not an isolated incident. NBC News recently reported that another Florida woman was charged with a DUI this month after driving the wrong way into a school’s pick-up lane and hitting the curb several times.
A police spokeswoman echoed the judge’s concern over the incident, saying that the situation easily could have become a tragic one. In many cases, drink driving causes vehicle accidents and leaves other motorists severely injured or dead. Hopefully, these two women will serve as an example and prevent others from driving under the influence.
