Justin Bieber Starts DUI Defense With Not Guilty Plea
Unlike many celebrity DUI spectacles, Justin Bieber’s recent arrest in Florida continues to make headlines. Although this is partly due to Bieber’s other recent run-ins with law enforcement, his DUI arrest has become more and more interesting as the details emerge. The original facts of the arrest are widely available and fairly straightforward.
At nearly 4 a.m., officers pulled over the teen singer for street racing in a rented Lamborghini. The arresting officer reported that he smelled alcohol on Bieber’s breath, and his eyes were bloodshot. The officer administered a field sobriety test, which Bieber failed, leading to an arrest and a DUI charge.
CNN reports that the singer was given two breath tests, which both indicated that he was not too drunk to drive. Unlike many other states, Florida does allow people under 21 to drive with some alcohol in their system, as long as their blood alcohol content (BAC) is below .02 percent. Bieber’s BAC was estimated to be between .011 percent and .014 percent.
Although He Was Under The Legal Limit, He May Still Face A DUI Conviction
The pop star reportedly told police that he had smoked marijuana and took prescription pills before he was pulled over. Presumably, the police insisted on a blood test at the station to determine which drugs the star had in his system at the time of the arrest. The prosecution may need the results to pursue the DUI because new reports claim that the case against Bieber is fairly weak.
The police report estimates that Bieber reached speeds of at least 50 miles per hour (mph) in a 30 mph speed zone. Although his speeding was the basis for the traffic stop, he was not issued a ticket for racing or speeding. Furthermore, the company that rented the sports car claims that their GPS system proves Bieber was only travelling at 34 mph before he was pulled over.
